Better late than never

The Spanish Catholic Church is moving towards endorsing contraception:
"Condoms have a place in the global prevention of AIDS," Juan Antonio Martinez Camino, spokesman for the Spanish Bishops Conference, told reporters after a meeting Tuesday with Health Minister Elena Salgado to discuss ways of fighting the disease.
Pope John Paul II, of course, may be responsible for as many deaths than Hitler or Stalin. And Ratzinger looks like he'll carry on the tradition. Almost everyone I say this in front of seems to hate me for it. There's a difference, of course, between deliberate extermination and neglectful disregard in service of a declared higher purpose, but no one stops counting Hitler and Stalin's victims where the first category ends and the second begins. Why should we treat the Pope any differently?
